I actually think that most of America is very sexually repressed. If you look back to all of the cultures that have existed on this earth, you'll find that western culture today is still well in the dark ages when it comes to attitudes on sex. Most of America believes strongly in waiting until marriage to have sex. Even public schools teach this, and do not teach about contraceptives. To think that schools wouldn't teach people how to avoid disease or pregnancy, when we have that knowledge is really a shame and quite backwards. American attitudes towards homosexuality is just barbaric compared to ancient civilizations and some countries in modern Europe that are much more open-minded.

Enjoying sex is a part of being human, but many religions have tried very hard to counteract that part of human nature. There are many theories on why, and the reasons were and maybe still are valid, but one should look at the broad picture of sex and human nature across all civilizations and cultures before they decide on what is right for them.

in a way, it's good to be liberated, than treat sex as a taboo, and indulge in it with a guilt complex. americans and europeans ar liberated as you say, mainly because they are prosperous, well-off, and have a lot of freedom to enjoy. material needs satisfaction give the population, an opportunity to think about pleasures, and indulge whole-heartedly. if you ask about other cultures, with modernisation, exposure to the western culture thru advent of media and means of communication, there is hardly any culture left in india here, even in rural areas. young girls and boys are much more liberated than older generations. we also have problems of unmarried motherhood, elopements, hiv, and sex offences. but the difference is, the western society takes a much liberal view of sex-related matters, and children are more on their own, so there is no big hue and cry about single parents, dating, and things like that. yes, the cultural influences do interfere in getting fully liberated for sex, because oe gets scandalised, and divorces are also not so much acceptable.but indians are getting bolder and bolder, day by day!

Yes. Since the 1960s, western culture has promoted sex and allowed it to be something open and 'ok', it does not demonise it or make it into something 'dirty' or 'evil' like some eastern cultures do.

as an american, i'd have to say it is because of our media. so many popular songs and shows seem to be about sex. it's almost as if we grow up becoming desensitized to sex. it is no longer this sacred thing that people wait until marriage to do. it's risque, exciting, pleasurable... and it is no longer frowned upon to not wait til marriage. sex is everywhere and very few people are telling society it should take it more seriously and wait for marriage.

I think you'll find that American and European attitudes are very different, at least with regard to sex and the media.
