One of my all-time favorite movie lines was uttered by Charlie Chaplan in "Monsieur Verdoux."

For those unfamiliar with the flick, a. you really should see it, and b. in it, Chaplin played a character (Msr. Verdoux) who married and murdered women to get their money to pay for his beloved wife's medical treatments,

Anyway, after being caught and condemned, as he is led to the guillotine, a priest says to him, "...may God have mercy on your soul..."

To which Monsieur Verdoux/Chaplin responded:

"Why wouldn't he? After all it's his." (Probably not the exact line, but that's the gist of it.)

If there is a God and if God is as the Christian religion says, then God does not hate you, rather God is love and God is the origin.

Anyone who says otherwise is ignorant.

Unfortunately, religion still is the opiate of the masses, and so it is not the fount of all wisdom. I hasten to add that I am not seeking to impugn faith based religions, rather I am only noting that the masses are the masses, nothing more, nothing less. So, we expect to find a high incidence of less informed, unenlightened and ignorant peoples in different churches just as in society in general.

And, a fool is a fool, and always willing to open his or her mouth and prove it, regardless of all else. Sad to see so many good people suffer due to the overly vocal idiot constituency, wherever that is -- in religious communities, politics, or even the gay communities.

Source: raised in a Congregational Christian church-going family, educated to think things through and grown into a rational, caring and compassionate man. I'm straight, but my housemate is gay as are many friends and even a few relatives.

God does not hate gay people, people hate gay people
Whenever powerful people are scared or don't like a minority, they use the bible to attack them. So now, many religious homophobes use the bible verse about if a man sleeps with a man, it is an abomination and they say that's proof God hates gays. Then, since a lot of people also don't like gays, many believe this and it spreads like wild fire. But, God does not hate gays.

The only thing wrong with gays, religously, is -IF- they engage in sexual activity, it is a sin because they are not married and sex is not meant to be for pleasure, only for reproduction into a married catholic family. But this is in no way any worse than straight people having sex before marriage for a purpose other than kids (how often does this happen?)

The school is out on whether being Gay is being born Gay or a lifestyle choice.

There are too many fences I could ride here.

I am straight, but it is not my place to judge you, or any of my friends who are gay.

My take is that if you are in a healthy and happy relationship, then power to you.

Biblically, it DOES say to not lie down with your own kind...but what does that really mean?

In Church, it is taught that it means no "woman to woman" and no "man to man".

However, what if God meant "if you're white, don't be with another white person"? You know?

I really wish I had an answer. All I can say is that God hates no one, and that if people can go to Heaven after murdering someone (I mean, there is a COMMANDMENT against that!!), then there is no reason why a good couple whose only "biblical fault" was being Gay cannot make it to salvation, too.

God doesn't hate gays, this is what some extremist say to "prove" that we follow a path of "sin" If God would really hated you or any other fellow gay (men / women) you and the rest of us wouldn't be here asking that question because you (and the rest of the gay people) should have already died of aids, or in a car accident, or some other twisted dead. But we are here and we are queer and as far as you and we love our family and do our best to be better each day, God will never hate gay people.

God does not hate his creation, but hates the sins of his creations.

Gay people give into temptation instead of following what is right. It is not the gays God hates, but the fact they give into lust and mess up the way men and women were designed for each other and to make humanity grow.

And God did not make it that gay people were born gay, they chose it. You must be talking about transsexuals.

Transsexuals are a different story, they are two gendered and must choose which gender their brain functions with.

For example Edward 'Gwen' Arajou had the brain functioning of a female, but the body of a male. She chose to be a female, there is no sin in that. For God made her that way. She was not acting gay when she chose to be her mind and not her body.

I have enjoyed reading all answers and it seems everyone agrees on the fact that the Lord is Love, thence He cannot hate homosexuals, but the act of homosexuality. Now, the problem shifts on a different ground which is the definition of the homosexual person. If we want to draw light on this adjective, homosexual is a person that has attraction for people of the same sex. I do not see any wrong as long as the attraction is limited to gestures of affection and caring (kissing, hugging). The problem rises when we talk about sexual acts, but both homosexuals and especially heterosexuals are called to live a chaste life. Many would be surprised, and it is not me saying this but the Catechism of the Catholic Church par. 2348 states that everyone (included married people) are called to chastity. Of course, we are all human and have weaknesses, which is understandable, but we can certainly improve our lives. We all agree that the Lord created us in His image, but if you look deep inside, homosexuals are not different from heterosexual: when attraction is a sign of sincere affection (and I do not mean the sexual act) and if a person truly loves a neighbour, regardless of the sex, is there anything more beautiful than that?

Hi Alex,
I don't believe that God hates anyone. He would be a very confused and unhappy Creator if He brought into existence, things that brought Him displeasure, wouldn't you think? If God hates anything, I think it is self destructive behavior, or as some call it, sin. I would bet that if you spent some time getting to know Him, you would be as surprised as I was, at what a truly friendly and loving Being He is. He just wants us to be happy, and for us to avoid things that cause pain and suffering. The bible says that many of the most religious people in the world, will never enter His kingdom. Jesus said that the prostitutes and despised tax gatherers would enter the kingdom before the religious hipocrites. He did not say that they would enter AS prostitutes and tax gatherers. My advice is to make the effort to establish a genuine personal relationship with Him. Get to be friends with Him, then you will know what to do. After you meet Him, you will probably fall in love with Him, and you will then do whatever it takes to make Him happy, even if you think you were born to do the opposite.

I still don't believe people actually think that!. It's a choice and you and everyone else in the world knows it.

Nobody hates you, well maybe not everybody.....But it says in the bible that homosexuality is a sin. But then again GOD also gave us the freedom of choice. You just will have to ask for forgivness and take that up with GOD when you get there.

Also if you are a good person then why worry

Peace out

The only reason God hates gays is because Reverend Phelps says so. He and his brethren expend enormous time and energy spreading this word, but it is not the Word of God; it is his interpretation. That is the case with many people in different religious communities - they interpret scripture in a particular way and expect everyone to accept that as the true Word of God. This behavior flies in the face of one of the Ten Commandments; I believe this behavior, interpreting scripture and declaring it the Word of God, is what the Commandment regarding taking the Lord's name in vain is all about. It doesn't mean you can't say "G-- D--," it means you should not make declarations or take action that you claim is in God's name rather than your own. At least, that's my interpretation of it. :-)

By the way, I take exception with your statement, "... according to this its his fault were gay." [sic] If God is infallible, then nothing could be His fault. He doesn't make mistakes, so there is no blame.

he doesn't. Men have interpretted the bible any way that suits them. My guess....wayyyy back in the day, some guy came home and find his wife getting it on with another chick. And another dude had feelings about men he didn;t understand. And another walked in or found his brother getting it on with a dude. So they take the words in the bible, change them and re-word them any way they want to. Don't agree? Someone else made this incredibly good point a few days ago....

The term homosexual was not coined until what the 19th century? the bible was written......a lonnnng time before that. So how can anyone say homosexuality was discussed in the bible when the word didn;t exist, but it does now. And it's in the bible now. The homosexual acts discussed in the bible are always accompanied with adultery, promiscuity, rape and prostitution...those things are wrong in our society no matter who is doing them.

God does not hate homosexuals and he does not hate murderers and he does not hate drug addicts and he does not hate librarians.
God hates SIN. That is why Jesus his son came to earth to accknowledge that sin is in the world and he came to do something about it. He died in the cross for you and for me and for the world, because we cannot excape sin by our own doings
God loves the homosexual the murder the no body lost and lonely. You have been lied too. Wether or not homosexuals are born that way it still is SIN because God did not create homosexuality. We humans perverted sexuality to our own lusts.
You can come out from homosexuality and live a worthy life giving God the praise that is due to him. With the help of Jesus and others in a GOOD CHURCH this can be accomplished.
