How do these little guys get into a house? Front door? Hole in the wall?

Mice can get into a hole the size of a dime and rats can get into a hole the size of a quarter, so my exterminator tells me. They have flexible skeletal systems. Inspect your home carefully for openings. Some of their particular favorites are the dryer vent, the toilet vent on the roof, the space between the siding and foundation and gutters without animal guards through the eave holes.

Look for gaps in the bottom of your doors.
They can flatten themselves and crawl in.
You can buy plastic door flaps to stop them and they are very effective.

Rats and mice like open food containers and to crawl along side walls. Look behind furniture for nests and holes that they may have nawed in the wall.

Good luck!

I've had pet rats so I can tell you those little buggers are escape artists and can twist and contort their little bodies into amazing spaces. So they don't need much of a space to make it into your home. So, yeah, I suspect they just squeeze their little selves in to a crevice your not even aware you have.

Rats come up through the toilet since they typically start in the sewer system.
