No, but if you have a crimmie record you have to apply before stepping on the plane and it takes a couple of months to hear whether you can enter the country. Some one in my village had booked a holiday to New York applied for a travel visa and was declined because of a caution and court appearance. To say the least he was a bit gutted.

Yes. When I was 18, I took my sister to visit Canada for the first time. I had a driver's license, but my sister was only 9 and had no ID. The Canadians let us into the country, but the Americans held us at the border until they contacted my father and verified that I wasn't kidnapping her.

Haven't been there myself, but I've been told that:
a) when they ask you why you have come to the States, if you say you're looking for a husband they will stamp "DO NOT ALLOW INTO USA" on your passport and deport you.
b) they force UK citizens to agree that their nationality is "UK citizen" and get nasty if you try to insist that you are Scottish, Welsh etc.

It's easier to get in & out of the US than it is to get back into the UK even on a British passport

I forgot my green card at home in the US. When I was coming back INS seen my name , picture and information on their computer but they wouldn't let me in unless I paid them $195.00.
They take credit cards.
I don't forget my green card when I cross the border anymore.

you only have trouble if you have a criminal record... and they are right to make it hard for you to get in.... like we should over here.. but dont seem to be able too... if you're foreign "come to england.. get a free house, shop, car.. everyone else will pay for you.".. f'ing terrible it is too.....stop it now!!
