There are several versions of the "Unified Theory" with small differences one from another. However, we won't really achieve just one theory because that's all it is --- just a theory. We don't have all the necessary knowledge to REALLY KNOW what happened and what governs the Universe.. so until we become infinitely smarter, we'll just have to keep on guessing and arguing between ourselves as to what we think is right...

What exactly do you mean by a unified theory of the universe, and why exactly would you want one?
The religious right in the United States considers the Bible to be a unified theory of the universe, as far as I can tell. It doesn't seem to help them a great deal, if George W. Bush is any evidence of its effectiveness.
Stephen Hawking, for all his mathematical brilliance and creativity, is, basically, just an inspired science fiction writer. Entertaining, but of rather little practical significance.
Do you want an answer to all possible questions we could ever ask about anything? Wouldn't that make life rather uninteresting?

it seems to be what string theory is all about.
whether this will be anything more than theory is unknown
perhaps there is a limit to what the human mind will be able to know about the universe, somethings may be to small and some to large for us to fully comprehend but its still fun trying.
