Some people do research; some people work in the service delivery side. I think both are extremely important. Help me elaborate more...what are some good points about research, in your view?

In research, everything you do is new (hopefully). This is exciting in itself. In a research environment, you can explore ideas that may seem to have a lower probability of success, but have larger potential payoffs. For example, no company would have invested in the idea of the Internet in the late sixties. It would have sounded crazy to even talk of such a thing. But researchers made it happen because they were free to explore ideas without worrying about profit and loss.

Both are important. Research brings us a better understanding of how the world works, what our impacts are on it, and provides new ways to improve the quality of human life. In the best of all worlds, we would have the people who are best at generating new knowledge doing research and the people that are most skilled at providing services providing them.
