I have a plant come up in my garden and I have a horrible feeling it may be deadly nightshade/belladonna. How can I confirm this? Also if it is how do I get rid of it permanently? It's very pretty but it's in my front garden and the local kids play there and I don't want them getting hurt from it.

If it is nightshade, pour boiling water on it, avoiding plants around it. That will kill it.

As answered before, use the local extension service. Most state supported universities having an agriculture department will publish an illustrated manual on "Poisonous Plants of your State"

I am located in an area where silver leaved nightshade is very common & quite pretty (altho weedy).

I never hear of any problems with it poisoning anyone.

The local nightshade is easy to pull up. If you keep it pulled before it sets seed, you will have it mostly under control. You could always use herbicides but I try to avoid them.

If in any doubt, take a snippet of it, including flower and or berries, to your local extension office (found in the phone book) and ask them to identify the plant.
You could begin to do an image search on the Internet.

Take a sample to a Landscaper or a Botanist for identification purpose, if your right ROUND-UP.
