Because people are the product of their world. Therefore, their perspective is as narrow or expansive as their life experience has taught them.

Those "Answers" users who are from the USA probably make the assumptions for different reasons than those who are not from the USA.

Both groups make the assumption based on probability, and many of the former also do so because, owing to cultural reasons, the default, and possibly unconscious presumption is that everyone who matters is from the USA; their culture and their viewpoint is so US-centric, it just doesn't occur to them that the assumption might be erroneous. Most Americans don't even have passports, so we can hardly expect them to have a balanced view of their place in the world when their government is a megalomaniac on the global stage, and they haven't ever travelled outside the US. Also let us not forget that Yahoo is a US thing, despite having global reach.

because americans have really large egos and they think that there is no other world outside their country. they think they are the best in the world in every aspect. china has a bigger population but they are not yet that well off to have internet access let alone buy a computer. yahoo is already an international company, so that's no reason to assume that all users here are americans.

Hi there,

Good question and one that seems to have a simple answer with some complex psychology.

Unlike most other countries in the world, the US is a large and vast country. Outside of business and government people from the US have very little contact outside of the USA in our personal, daily lives. In most other parts of the world to move from one country to another it is a matter of driving a few hours and you are dealing with people from another country or culture. In the US we just cross state lines and can communicate with people who speak the same language and have similar customs, except in the south, they are kinda weird and have a funny accent. (J/K. I love the south!)

So, the short reason, the US is a country that is egocentric due to the vastness of our borders and lack of readily accessible contact with people from other countries. Does this justify the egocentricness of the USA? Not really, but good luck in trying to change it. Maybe over more time with more access to the Internet with people from all over the world it will change minds. Keep in mind that this is a short answer to a complex question.

Keep in mind that this is my personal opinion. A wise man once said to me that opinions are like butholes, everyone has them, and most stink.

I would think because Yahoo is American, and therefore most Americans assume that whenever they spoeak to somebody online they have to be in the USA. I married an American who had never left her state, let alone had a passport to leave the country!

For some it is hard to understand or remember that this is world wide and if they clicked on USA questions only button then it should be a fair assumption

Americans, including me, probably make up the majority of Yahoo! Answers users. I think we are much more likely to assume that all English speakers are from our own country than other nationalities. Since we often can't tell from your questin that you are not American, we are going to assume that you are.

They've got a pretty big population. Stands to reason that an company like Yahoo would have U.S. users...

I don't think we do. I think you're misinterpreting the fact that we ask questions about the USA as us assuming that everyone on answers is from the USA. We live here, so naturally we're going to ask questions related to our own country, but I do realize there are people from other countries on here.

I'll tell you what confuses me - why don't I ever see anyone not from the USA asking questions related to their own country?

They just don't know any better and of course when you are in the usa on yahoo answers you would think everyone else until someone corrects you.
