Why is it that when we know the right thing to do - we often do not do it?

I believe it is because we are disoriented. Our actions are governed by our values. Most people live in what you might call an egocentric universe. Everything revolves around them and what they percieve as their needs and wants. From this view of life, it is very easy to make poor choices, which can cause suffering for ourselves and others. Only by understanding that we are all connected, and that everything you do will always come back to you, will you do what is thought of as "right" If you look at the Ten Commandments closely, you will see that they are nothing more the basic rules for living a happy life. If you break any of them, somebody is going to get hurt. If you don't care about others, this won't bother you. If you begin to realize that we are all brothers and sisters from the same ancestors(whether you believe in creation or evolution doesn't matter), then you avoid behavior with negative consequences. Your core beliefs and values are what control your choices. Change your values, change your actions.

Because the 'right thing' is probably the most difficult thing to do under the circumstances and so we take the easy route!

Many reasons most of them being pride, then insecurity, after that shyness. But many efforts can be made in other ways.
To let the right thing pass us by is a neglectful mistake.........^_~
