It is the cradle of civilization and it wasn't destroyed by liberals.

Here's a couple thoughts for you.

The increased divorce rate has to do with the following issues:

1. Suburbanization.
The primary factor is the "sprawling" of America. As we left the cities or farms and moved to the suburbs, our families spread from small neighborhoods where multiple generations often lived near one another if not in the same home. This meant that the burden of child-rearing, once shared by mothers, aunts, grandmothers, and retired grandfathers was placed solely on the shoulders of the mother.

The economic pressures of commuting - in the city, we were less likely to own a car - frequently led to the need for a second income requiring more women to enter the workforce.

As women entered the work-force, we transition to cause number two.

2. The financial independence of women

Across the world, where women have higher incomes, the divorce rate is higher. Conservatives will, of course, place that blame on feminism, but I think it goes more to fact that too many marriages are entered into too easily and exited from too easily. There was a time when a woman basically HAD to be married to get by as an adult, because the workplace was so limited. That is no longer true, so one of the major factors that kept a (bad) marriage together was eliminated. As more people get divorced, the stigma associated with divorce decreases, thus making divorce socially easier.

Finally, I would like to point out that a lot of facts have been twisted about gay marriage or partnership in Scandanavia:

In Denmark which began recognizing gay marriage in 1989 has seen the following benefits and improvements in marriage. Presently, Denmark is experiencing the highest rate of marriage since the early 1970's.In 1989, the divorce rate of heterosexual couples was 48%. It is now 46%, down 2%. Out of wedlock births have also declined by 2%. And, not that there's a causal relationship, but the economy of Denmark has improved consistantly in that time, by an average of 3.4% (that's just to prove that the world didn't fall apart when they recognized gay marriage.) At present the divorce rate for homosexual couples in Denmark is 17% - 30 points lower than their heterosexual counterparts.

So, it appears that the fears of destroying the family are false, and that, in fact, the ultra-liberal policy of gay marriage may acutally improve marriage.

Oh, by the way, John Skerry, I know you won't read this. This is for anyone who actually likes a little bit of factual support with their answers and arguments.

.First, what's the idea that families are "the cradle of civilization"? (Excuse me, Mesopotamia) Clans and tribes were formed to provide a critical mass to sustain individual groupings. A "family" outside one of these structures perished pretty quickly. It was through communal effort and support that the first civilizations arose.
More to the point is the statement that liberals wish to destroy "the family unit and civilization". Would those liberals who wish to destroy civilization, please raise their hands? Many would argue that it is the liberals and their concern for communal values who are the best chance to save civilization. (Really, what plans do you have after civilization is destroyed?)
Of course, we see a change in the pattern of family life. From extended families to nuclear families to variations of these traditional concepts which are adjusting to even more pulsating and radically changing economic conditions. Truly, social mores are also changing in an ever more complex and rapidly changing society. Agreed that 'The 'Brave New World' being spear headed by the administration in Washington and out-of step right wing groups poses many threats to our traditional values of a humane, free and open society which has been our heritage to date. But, please don't blame that on the very people who are striving to protect the human and humane nature of our civilization.

How idiotic and one sided can you be. The Republicans chose to trade education and books for guns and war. How does that benefit the family unit. They attack social services and social security for lining their pockets with the money of hard working Americans. If conservatives care so much about the family unit why did they send so many parents to war to die for a meaningless cause, cut funding to foster families and social services agencies, and opt to get rid of estate taxes for the rich.
That is helping the family unit.

You probably don't even read the "answers" that you get to your "questions" because you already know the answer. Your mind is made up, you are right, and everyone with a different opinion needs to be hung. Oh wait, I forgot, in your world there is no such thing as an opinion, there is only "fact".

The fact is you are an immature little boy and you don't get enough attention in the real world, so you get people angry in the cyber world in order to feel like you're important.

At a minimum, it would obviously depend on the specific family. Manson family? No.

Relax. Civilization has endured with all different kinds of family units.

i think this is changing. one hundred years in the past, the kin unit often made out of the youngsters, their mom and father, grandparents and perhjaps an aunt or uncle and a cousin ro 2. the commercial Revolution and the boost of suburbs etc shifted that to being toddlers, and their mom and father. i think of we are seeing a added evolution. i individually wish to confirm a much wider type of kin instruments. i think of many of the old paradigms approximately marriage, illigetimacty of infants, divorce and what constitutes kin instruments as transforming into out of date and meaning to get replaced by ability of components which will functionality lots an identical way. it rather works very properly certainly, in my case.

It is but I would not say liberals are seeking to destroy it any more than conservatives. How many conservatives leave there kids with illegal alien nannies to raise them?
