While it won't cause problems with any other system in your car it does mean the anti lock isn't functioning properly. Try to take it to Autozone they usually scan it for free so you can at least find out how serious the problem is. You will still have " normal " brake function but the vehicle can lock up

People would be surprised to hear that you can actually turn off the ABS system by lifting the emergency brake handle and driving the car. I do not mean to actually apply the emergency brake and slow or stop the car with the rear wheels, I simply mean giving it enough emergency brake to signal the computer that it is on while driving.
The computer will see this and turn off the ABS system and light the ABS light to tell you it is not working. People living in snow conditions are probably aware of this feature as the ABS system is annoying when driving on ice.
In your case, before you think you've got an ABS failure, you should be sure your emergency brake is fully disengaged and be sure the brake light on the dash works when the emergency brake is applied as well.
Once the ABS light is on, it can only be reset by turning the ignition off and restarting the car.
Let's hope this is what is causing your ABS light to come on, otherwise it could get expensive. The ABS system has it's own computer that operates the system based on pulse information from each wheel. It checks to see that pulses are recieved and takes hydraulic pressure away from any wheel whose pulses stop prematurely, i.e. skidding.
I hope this helps.

It's scary to read some of the responses to this question such as "ABS is annoying on ice...you can pump your brakes, so you are fine, etc"
No one can pump their brakes as effectively as ABS. And I have yet to meet someone that can "pump" pressure hydraulically to only the tire(s) that are in various amounts of limited slip/lock.
ABS on ice can be a life saver. ABS is there to give you the Safest, Controlled Stop. You will be able to steer much better with ABS than without in an emergency situation such as this.
Anyways, to answer the original question, the others are right.
An ABS light just means that the ABS is disabled because of a malfunction, but you still have fully functional base brakes and are not doing further damage to your vehicle.

if you pump the brakes that will shut off abs until you restart the car. that will not affect anything else and in fact if you know how to drive a car without abs you will probably never notice that there is a problem

The light is warning you that there is a problem with your brakes, it won't cause any problems but should dealt with as soon as possible.
Good Luck
