You could do some relaxation exercises before bedtime such as tensing up you muscles one by one and relaxing them.

Lie in bed and tense your toes for 5 seconds and then relax them, move up to your calf muscles, do the same all the way up until your neck and shoulders and face are done) this should help remove some tension from your body

You could also just count backward from 500,
close your eyes and imagine you are standing at a black board, write to number 500 then erase it and write 499 etc.this should help you focus on something other that the thoughts running through your head and keeping you up

stay away from caffine 4 hours before bed and drinks for 1 hour before bed

good luck

I don't drinking anything with a high level of sugar and/or caffeine after 5 or 6pm. Also try not to work out late in the evening.
Taking a shower before bed is also very helpful. What happens is that your body temperature rises while in the shower, then after you get out your temperature drops back to normal. For some reason, the fluctuation in your body temperature causes you to become sleepy. (I read about this in a health and fitness magazine, sorry I do not have any references for you to refer to).

Milk and turkey both have tryptophan in them and act as a sedative to help you sleep, This is one reason people get so sleepy after a thanksgiving dinner.

2 tablespoons of pure peppermint in a glass of water. It will knock you out cold! It is really good if you need the sleep, as if you were sick.

You could try Valerian root. It's an herb, but it stinks. It's in some over-the-counter remedies.
