My wife woke up with knee pain especially around the knee cap, with nearly immediate swelling, with no previous injury. It will not bend. She says even touching the skin makes it hurt. She was taken to the local hospitol and they could not find out what is wrong with it (the docs here suck) She has an appointment on monday with our regular doctor, but we are curious what it could be. Thank you for any help you can provide.

It isn't difficult to get a knee injury. The wrong step, or picking up something too heavy can do it. It does need to be x-rayed. In the meantime she can apply ice for 20 minutes on and off as needed, take Ibuprofen, and keep off of it until she can get to a real doctor.

There are quite a few possibilities. The spider bite suggestion sounds interesting. Does it itch?

It could also be some form of arthritis or auto-immune disorder. Clearly these would be serious and require a proper medical diagnosis.

In the meantime, ibuprofen (brand names are usually motrin or aleve but generic is okay too), up to 800 mg every 4-6 hours (unless she is pregnant..then always call the doc before taking any meds) and ice should help ease the swelling.

Take a picture of it now. That way if the swelling goes down before she gets to the right doctor, you can demonstrate what it looked like which may help the doctor.

Good luck. Hope it isn't serious.

This is called Aamvata in ayurveda and Rheumatoid arthritis in modern medicine. Person has swelling around knee cap, or local heating (warmer feeling), can not easily get up if sitting with folded legs on ground. Stiffness, a sound when joint moves are also symptoms. If weight on knee kncreases as when going up the staircase, pain is more.
There are excellent medicines and massage oils in ayurveda, and naturopathic detoxification procedures yield sufficient relief. The best treatment is "Basti" a panchkarma procedure with medicated oils.

Something could have spontaneously ruptured in the knee (a ligament, blood vessel, tendon, etc.) and that is causing the pain and swelling. An infection could be the cause, or a number of other possibilities. It seems strange that the hospital you went to did not have a qualified orthopeadic doctor that could have evaluated her, but apparently they did not. A "regular" doctor is really NOT the person to see. Your wife would need to see a doctor of othopeadic medicine.

Make sure she's on anti inflamatories and maybe cold and heat therapy. She could've cracked the knee cap loose somehow. I'm not a medical person though.

Take ibroprufen to bring the swelling down. When it improves start taking glucosamine tablets every day. These are a good herbal remedy for any aching joints. Hope she is ok.

Hard to say. she may think she didn't injure it...but you can injure it just by normal walking. She could have a torn meniscus or a torn ACL. Persist with the medical care. If her doctor comes up blank, force him to find someone else or refer her to an orthopedic specialist.

She really needs to have the doctor check her to make sure it's just from the fall. The doctor may want her to get a x-ray to make sure.
