I live in Utah, about an hour north of SLC. We have pretty cold winters and really hot summers. Our weather goes from one extreme to another all the time. It doesn't bother me but some people hate it. We have a saying here where you use your heater in the morning and air conditioner during the day and heater again at night!
You will find a good deal of the population is of course Mormons. In general I would say we are a very family oriented culture. Even though there's lots of Mormons, there is still "night life" clubs and stuff like that in SLC if you are not Mormon.
I love living in Utah, I have lived here, Seattle and Denver.

I lived there for a year in college, I am from California. Anyway, I really liked it. It's really hot in the summer and cold in the winter. But, it's really dry there, so the hot/cold wouldn't bother you as much as if you are used to a more humid climate. But, b/c it's so dry you have to wear lots of lotion. The skiing/snowboarding is great b/c the snow is powder almost the whole season. It's very beautiful there, especially in the winter. It's nice b/c it's part big city, part small town. There's a small downtown, with tall buildings and Jazz basketball, Abravanel Hall (for concerts and stuff, like the Days of 47 Pops), theatre, nice restaurants, you can even get a carriage ride around Temple Square. Temple Square is beautiful and you can get free tours daily. Then outside of the actual downtown, there are some cute old fashioned houses, it has a real Main Street USA kind of feel. There's a great library at the University of Utah, and the Pioneer Theater Company, if you like theatre.
The culture I think, is hard to describe. There are a lot of mormons there. They are generally friendly and nice. They don't drink or anything, and they are usually pretty modest. There are also a lot of non-mormons there and they are nice too, they are probably just like the people from your town.
Make sure you go skiing though! Have fun! I hope you like it there.

Utah is full of mountains. There is beautiful snow that is great for skiing in the winter. In the summer it is nice weather. The culture is very welcoming and supportive because 75% of the population belongs to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (also known as Mormons). The city of Salt Lake has a lot of activities and historic sites to visit. A full day trip to temple square is a MUST! It is so beautiful!

I live in downtown Salt Lake City and moved here from South Carolina in 1994. Weather is definately cooler overall than SC, and humidity is generally low. It gets pretty cold in the winter, but not as cold as when I lived in eastern Washington. Overall it's kind of unpredictable, but summers are generally fairly mild except late June to late August. Winters - since you'll be moving here then - are kind of a crap shoot, but not too bad as long as you don't mind some snow.
Culture-wise, Salt Lake City is a pretty cool place to live. As a medium-sized city, you have quite a bit of variety in places to eat and things to do, but without too much crime. The city has generally quiet but friendly people. Mormonism - as discussed - is the major religion here, but in Salt Lake City, it's influence isn't near as strangling as outside the city. Generally it is considered more of a conservative culture, but SLC itself is much more liberal than the rest of the state. You can generally find most things you want to do either in the city or not too far outside of it - with the exception of visiting an ocean, of course.
