You can do this, but then you have less filtering capacity and you also have some dirty oil left in the motor. An oil filter costs less than $10.00. Why would you want to take the risk of hurting your engine for that small amount of money?

Many oils are lasting longer, but it's actually the filter that needs changing first. There are very few filters on the market that still filter effectively after 3500-4000 miles, and cheap junk like Fram filters crap out at 1500-2000 miles, and go into "bypass" mode, where dirty oil bypasses the full filter and goes back into your engine - bad news.

Long endurance oil maker Amsoil guarantees their oil for 15,000 miles, but recommends changing the filter every 5,000.

Very bad idea to leave a regular filter on a car more than 3500-4000 miles.

do you take a bath with dirty water. Same thing. Putting new oil in and not changing the filter is not a good idea. THe filter is an inexpensive part that is very vital to the engine. All the impurities and dirt get trapped in the filter.

I would only do this if I was using synthetic oil. Even then I probably wouldn't do it. It seems silly, because the filter is so inexpensive.

Next time you purchase a vehicle consider getting one with an oil monitor. Using regular (non-synthetic) oil our car only gets a change every 5-6k miles, with synthetic oil we change it every 7500 miles, because that is the mile limit in the manual, not because the car tells us it needs an oil change. I use synthetic when I change my own, but oil change places charge way to much for it so I go with their normal oil. But synthetic is definetly better.

Yes you can but why? You can top off the oil and change them both at your regular oil change time. The saying goes, People won't spend $5.00 for oil filter, but will spend $500.00 for a engine.

Good Luck

No NO NO

The oil filter MUST be changed

You can change the filter but you don't have to change the oil if you don't want to

Keep your filter new and clean to prevent loss of oil pressure..

You can change the filter on every other oil changes ( I had a brother-in-law who did that ), But the filters are cheap for what they do-- so why not change it out while you're in there?

Pretty silly way to try and save 3 or 4 dollars.you can buy a filter for any car at Walmart or K-Mart for a few dollars so just change it.

Yes you can (fram filters, the cheap and overpriced crappy made ones no, they are fried after 3,000), the filter efficiency goes up as it gets more clogged (filters out finer stuff) BUT drops in flow..... I mean, its so cheap to replace em..... why not? if it was a beater car, not worth the money put into it..... maybe

no, change both. The example that was given to me is that it is like you taking a shower and then putting your dirty clothes back on. That is the best way I can explain it.
