In regards to Stephen Hawkins, man reaching out to the universe for his own survival. My question is, will man do the same things on a new world that he has done here? We already live in a garden of eden and we can't take care of it. I think we need to change here before we have any hope of surviving anywhere.

I think that humanity has done what it has done as a result of its innate nature. So, unless the nature of humanity changes (and it is always evolving) in some fundamental way, humanity is bound to repeat its history here--both the good and the bad aspects of it. The answer however lies in what George Santayana said: "Those who will not learn from history, are doomed to repeat it." The problem I have with his statement is the implicitly negative message, for I think his principle also allows for a positive aspect--Those who will not learn from history are also bound to repeat its successes. Knowing history is both a positive and negative thing, for being aware of the past can also hinder progress by suggesting what is/is not possible, what is/is not good or bad. History always contains value judgments. Applying this to leaving this earth and going out into the universe--our history and its value judgments will both help us and hinder us and thus shape our future there. That to me says we will repeat our history elsewhere for good or for bad....

Ultimately we will have to move to space. Some will stay behind to protect our "Eden" Some will not be allowed to return. Ultimately we will seed the universe with humanity. We will consume and reshape the environment. We will make it work... Until we encounter our neighbors... Then we will be conquered.

mankind has repeated history. Then man is doomed to repeat it again.
If mankind can't fix the problems it created here, tell me how can it avoid this on another planet?
