I don't know that this series of book describes individualism in a positive light...but it does show the struggle of collectivism vs. individualism. The Uglies trilogy by Scott Westerfeld (Uglies, Pretties, Specials) shows the conflict many of its characters face when choosing whether to conform to the group and remaining part of the unthinking (bubblehead) collective or breaking away from the group and learning to make your own choices and be yourself.

A great essay about individualism is Ralph Waldo Emerson's "Self-Reliance," and a wonderful book to follow it up is Henry David Thoreau's book Walden.

The Prince by Machiavelli. He influenced the thought of individualists who followed. It's kind of a manual for how to be a dictator.
