it is space-time expanding, and the expansion is accelerating. matter is just going along with the ride. however, galaxies within the universe do have some local motion within their galaxy clusters. also, the milky way and andromeda are approaching each other and will merge in a series of interactions beginning in about three billion years.

Actually there is more there than nothing. Energy and matter is still created in empty space, some theories state.
There is some dispute about expansion. I can't picture how all galaxies can move away from one another without expansion. It is, however, dangerous to take out daily experience and apply it in the realm of the atomic, or the universe.

The galaxies are moving away from each other. To be sure both. The universe is expanding and the galaxies are moving away from each other.

The data shows that galaxies are moving away from each other. From this one conclude that the universe is expanding. That is not necessarily true. There is no independant data to show that universe is expanding.

The conventional theory in the back of this actuality (it quite is fairly difficulty-free in our universe) is that those 2 galaxies are certain to at least one yet another. maximum probably, our 2 galaxies shaped next to at least one yet another after the vast bang, and were certainly shifting faraway from one yet another, although they became gravitationally certain, and maximum probably, the actual undeniable actuality that Andromeda is coming in route of us at 120km/sec(close estimate) is because its on a loop round our galaxy, so its making its beforehand i.e. is pulled lower back by using our galaxy. There are reliable odds that the galaxies actual does not collide quickly, merely the outer halos of both galaxies, although an finished on collision is available, as our Milky way is merging with a dwarf galaxy on the instant, yet thats been happening now for thousands of thousands of years. do not difficulty although, the collision is variety of four.5billion years away, the Earth will develop into inhabitable in round 1billion years because the sunlight, because it receives older receives hotter, finally burning out our environment.
