Go to www.Download.com and get some anti-spyware anti-adware software
I recommend SpyBot Search & Destroy, just search for SPYBOT.
I also recommend Ad-aware, so just search for ad-aware (with the hyphen).
Run both of these, get the Updates and do a full scan.
Check the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS section of your control panel. Maybe there is software that you do not need.
Also, run MSCONFIG from the RUN item on your start menu. UNCHECK some of the STARTUP programs that you do not need.
This will all help

Computers gets slower primarly because of a single reason. Lack of primary memory(RAM).
The RAM is where the OS(operating system - Win Linux etc) resides. Depending upon the features of the OS, it will take upto 20 to 40% of your RAM.
It means you will get only 80 to 60% of RAM for your programs.
You can make your machine faster by giving less programs to run in a time. Most of the dailywares installs in such a way that, they will be configred with the start up procedure. Uncheck all those programs from the start up list.(Start - Run - msconfig )
If you got a virus which you feel you will never get rid of, then there is only one way. Take the back up of all those un-infected files and docs, then format the disk.
Spywares and Adwares can be efficiently removed by a lot of dedicated programs for it.
Best of lucks

Try AVG. It not only stays up to date in seconds but can put viruses in a "vault" so nothing gets infected. Theres a free version of it I'm pretty sure but it might be just a trial. Either way it would definetly help.

If you are having serious system degradation/performance problems, then you may need more help then can be given here in this limited format. Let's face it, no one here can tell what infections you have on your system and therefore cannot tailor specific help for your system.
Depending on what you have, there may be specific removal tools and protocols for cleaning up your system and this format here is not really the place to do it. I would recommend you visit one of the free online tech help sites where folks who have experience in removing malware infestations can work with you individually to clean up your system.
Two sites that I'm involved with:
http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums/...
http://forums.techguy.org/
Good luck.
