Either sounds like a failing ignition coil..... or a non venting gas cap to me. Hard to pinpoint..... with sears it could have a tecumseh (all have float carbs) briggs with a diapragm style carb (carb mounted to tank) or honda with a float carb.

Sounds like there is some junk in the carburetor fuel jets, try removing the float bowl and cleaning it out, and make sure you clean the TINY holes in the screw that comes out of the bowl, they are VERY tiny, so you have to look for them really good!!

Toss the filter and buy a new one. Clean the spark plug, If the gas is old/stale, toss it.

Although unusual in a motor so new, try checking the vacuum lines. One may be crimped and only relaxes when it gets warm.

I would say that there is a problem with the choke, or the carburetor need some fine adjustment.

Try running without gas cap. Sometimes they get vapor-locked and do what you are describing. Something to try.
