They are threatening us because we have threatened them.
The US (and several other nations) have threatened to attack North Korea, economically or militarily, if North Korea doesn't stop researching missile technology.
While I don't think North Korea is a particularly nice country, they are a sovereign nation. And as such, they are entitled to research new technologies as long as they don't actually attack anyone with them.
It's question of whether the US has the right to tell another country what to do. If you think the US does, because it has the power to enforce its demands, then North Korea is being unreasonable. If you don't, then North Korea is merely responding to threats in kind.

They want financial support. They figure we are ignoring them because of Iraq and Iran so if they rattle the sabre a little we'll give them attention. Hey it's working!
