The best depends on what you want! also on how much you can spend. I worked for a Mercedes dealer - lost all interest in owning one. I had a Volvo (brand new!) - extremely safe cause it never ran!!! The best have weak spots and the safetest are less than half what they should be. The best handling and stopping, also have weak points in those areas. Doesn't matter how good a car is, if you hate it (strictly subjective!) and I would not own most built after the early 1990's, cause I can see out and they keep getting worse! somewhere there is somone with a car that is known to be "the worst" having NO PROBLEMS = happened to get an exceptionally good one.
Even though visibility is so bad, most newer cars are really very reliable and handle and stop very well even compared to 15 - 20 years ago (and they were V good for thier time) - all comparitive.
I've had 2 1/2 tom pick ups - a 1971 I got new and a 1996 I got in 2000 in fantastic shape. The 71 is STILL the MOST RELIABLE vehicle I've seen close up and the 96 is close. They happen to be Fords, cause I liked them. Most who have Chevys love em. Hate the new style trucks (and prices). I like trucks that act and fell like trucks and are not all fancied up with needless stuff - cars too in general ----Try and get one!

This is a good question but it depends cause every one has a different idea. it's really hard to say but i think mercedes benz is a good one. I prefer it but when you want to buy a car you should think about everything of a car like gas, security and so on...

i diagnose and repair all vehicles. the best vehicle as far as i am concerned is the lexus 400 series. i service about 30 of them regularly and they run from 1990 to 2004 and i have only replaced one item in them that was not normal. they pass the california smog inspections and they have never failed. merc. benz, volvo, bmw will fail after 100.000 miles, weak cat. converters.

Best does not mean most expensive.
Lexus is probably best in the overall sense of the word
as I interpret your question.

i am personally astonished that no one has came up with this sooner: the mclaren f1. not only can it do 242 mph, but it has more cargo space than a ford.
