I'm trying to get an idea of the price differences between units of different efficiencies, i.e., SEERs. Especially, I'm trying to evaluate if it is reasonable to upgrade to a high efficiency unit eligible for the energy tax credit.

I am especially interested in the various lines of Carrier units.

I know the size unit I need. I also have an estimate from my usual plumber/HVAC guy. I want an "invoice" price to compare to the "sticker" price I get from this firm and other firms I may get estimates from.

The manufacturers' web sites are useless - they just offer to find local firms for you.

I have asked similar questions myself (I am currently in the market for a new central air unit as well). The general feel I get is that high efficiency is only worth it if your house is also well insulated and the unit is properly installed. That means...

- Good windows, such as low-e, double panes, and/or solar shades
- Good attic insulation
- Properly sized duct work and returns

My city utility company offers a free Energy Audit were they pay for a contractor to come in and evaluate all of this stuff. They should also be able to tell you all of the credits and rebates you will get. See if your does something similar (I actually had several done to get different quotes).

Well if you are not going to do the work yourself then you may as well talk to a professional. Compressors are expensives items as I'm sure you guessed. But the size of the compressor depends on the square ft. to be cooled. Get several estimates and then decide.
