Ancient astronomers kept track of the patterns of the stars to identify their location and the dates of the year. It was helpful for them to see these patterns. Chinese and Persian astronomers used different patterns than the Greeks and Romans. All four of these groups took patterns from what was most prominent in their societies.

Well the stars weren't placed there by purpose to form a shape. It's just our brain trying to make a shape out of everything (just like when you look at a house with 2 windows and a door, it looks like a face). The reason they gave them names is to help sailors navigate at sea. They probably also thought it was cool ;)

It is by chance that the stars do this. If you look up tonight and connect the dots, I am sure you can find something. The only difference is that a long time ago romans and the chinese put names to these shapes and they stuck.

Remember that God created the stars to show us His infinite power and glory. Early men were all astrologers and picked out the shapes and gave them names. Scriptures written long ago already reflected some of these names (orion).

Do you mean constellations? Some constellations were made by shepards in fields looking at the night sky. They connected imaginary lines between the stars to create things relevant to them... gods, bears, etc. The names got handed down from generation to generation. Eventually the scientific community got together and determined which constellations would be accepted in the world-wide scientific community.

Stars are made up of gases, which is a state of matter. Matter possess attraction to each other; that's why the gases pull themselves towards each other to resemble a shape.

They have a name because scientists gave them one. Its easier to distinguish them by their name than to describe each.
