I worked at a garden in N. DE who had figs growing year round. Very unusual seeing that figs don't like the cold, but they covered them every year, and they survived (very unusual).

If you really, really wanted to try an experiment and grow them outdoors, plant one on a southern exposure next to a building or your house and definitely cover them with remay or maybe even burlap in the winter. You could even build a box around the fig and insulate it in the winter if you wanted to get crazy with it! All depends on how much you really want to grow figs outside.

I would not try that in Michigan. It is way too cold. If you do want to keep figs, you can grow them in containers. Put them outside in the summer, but bring them in in the fall (if you have a place for them).

The Weed Doctor has never been to Mich or Wis in winter. You could cover a fig tree with a barn full of hay & wrap it in electric blankets & not make it past December. I wonder how many he's killed since getting out of medical school?

Outside it will probably not survive your winters. You could always build a greenhouse! :)
