When I switch it on it goes off straight away. The battery is fully charged, I've swapped the battery from a similar laptop in work but it still won't switch on. Works OK off the mains.

TAKE IT BACK!!! or if you don't have a warranty or anything go get it fixed mine did that too! the exact same thing. it turned out i needed a new motherboard which is like the main thing for your laptop that keeps it alive. i really hope u have a warranty because its expensive and if you don't. i suggest you just get a new one if that one isn't new. good luck!

One of the two internal batteries may be flat. If there is a small cover on the back a few inches square, remove it and look inside for a small flat cell about the size of a coin, which may be wrapped in a 'jacket' of plastic heat shrink. (a coin cell...). If it's flat, your laptop quite possibly won't switch on. (Is it an IBM or a Toshiba by any chance; as certainly some of these both do this if the coin cell goes flat.) If you pull the main battery out and power it up from the mains and it does not know the time and date, it's very probable that it's the coin cell. A replacement would cost about £15 ($25US) if you buy a genuine part, or about £1 ($1.50US) if you knew what's actually inside the heat shrink wrapper. (My IBM did exactly what your laptop is doing. The genuine replacement IBM part is £12.50 from an Internet discount store, or £1.05 for just the tabbed coin cell...)

If you are not a technical person, find somebody who is to do this, as you can destroy your laptop by either shorting things out whilst it's on (dropping small screws onto the electronics), or by a electrostatic discharge from yourself to the electronics!

Maybe the battery is bad. My laptop battery always shows fully charged, but I know it's dead.

I never take it out, so it's always plugged in. I haven't bothered to replace the battery. That's the way my computer acts if I try to turn it on and it's not plugged in.

Are you sure the battery is not dead or incompatable with your computer. Rechargeable batteires lose their ability after many charges.
