Tough call. I'd probably go with Grave of the Fireflies; sad as it is, it's well done all around: art and animation are good, the story is beautiful, and the whole thing captures the war era feel very well. It's not as complex as Perfect Blue or Millennium Actress (which is good and bad --it's more accessible) and doesn't have the eye candy from Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, or the Escaflowne movie, but I'd pick it over any of them as a complete package.

I'd put Perfect Blue as a close second. It's not animated quite as well but it's engaging and brilliant. It's the kind of movie you keep seeing new angles on the more you watch it.

AMV Hell 3: The Motion Picture.
Just kidding.

It's Akira. Though the Miyazaki films are great, they still hold the element that allows children to watch them.

I think Akira really opened up the US to the concept of animation being more than somethng strictly for children.

In a close second is Jin-Roh, strictly for the dramatic impact. It was part of a multiple film series, but it is the only part that is animated.

Plot-wise, it's definitely not the best movie ever made but I thought FFVII Advent Children had awsome animation and sound. I loved excellent movies like Spirited Away and the Grave of the Fireflies but the enjoyment factor for Advent Children was greater for me and it stands on my personnal top five best movies.

I like Vampire Hunter D & Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. The story of the 1st is better, but the animation in the 2nd is better.
