The income tax is progressive in America. It is proportional to your TOTAL income and not simply your wage rate.

So, for instance, if you make $20/hour working full-time, you will be taxed at a higher rate for working overtime. If you get a raise, you will also see your tax rate increase. However, if you work less or get another job at $10/hour, it will decrease.

Working full-time for around $13/hour, the tax rate is almost exactly 25%. The top income tax bracket pays around 35% of their income to the feds. The lowest income tax bracket pays around 10%. This bracket was expanded by the 2003 tax cuts and the top bracket was lowered from 40% in the 2001 cuts.

Everyone pays 6.2% for Social Security and 1.45% Medicare right off the top. The rest depends on what tax bracket, and filing status you have for Federal taxes. Also, your state and city might have a percentage they take as well.

For most adults, take-home pay is going to be no more than 80%, usually more like 70% after taxes, and other deductions. To find out, calculate your net against your actual pay and get the %. than you can always use that % to figure out how much your check will be.
