Life as we know it would have ended. Asteroids or comets hitting the earth apparently caused the extinction of the dinosaurs and we would have suffered the same fate. Depending upon where it struck, we would be inundated with massive flooding, or there would be a cloud of dust surrounding the earth blocking out all sunlight for a number of years.
If it had struck the moon, it would have probably knocked the moon out its orbit - depending upon the severity of the strike. Had that happened, since the earth is dependant upon the moon for the ebb and flow of tides from the ocean, someone would be getting flooded out. If it didn't knock the moon out of its orbit, nothing would have happened since the moon has been struck numerous times throughout history. It would all depend upon the size of the asteroid.

If it had hit the Moon, there would be a new crater, probably large enough to see with large telescopes but too small to see with most home telescopes.

If it had hit the Earth, we would definitely notice it. If it hit the ocean it would create a tsunami. If it hit on land it would make a crater maybe a mile or so wide. People nearby would definitely feel the shaking and people withing a few tens of miles would probably be killed by the blast.

actual Earth is being impacted by using thousands of a lot of meteoric debris on a daily basis. each and every shooting favourite individual is an asteroid that as is burns up, that is ashes (dirt) then gently floats right down to Earth. in case you do not believe me, bypass sparkling out your gutters with a magnet. maximum of those little iron filings you're choosing up are the continues to be of meteorite dirt. even if, i believe your question is with regards to huge rocky bodies and their probability of intersecting with Earth's orbit even as Earth occupies an same area. There are some asteroids, that all of us understand of, who's orbit takes them perilously close to to Earth. As those products are extra heavily studied, their orbital motions will be heavily studied and predictions to their positions will grow to be steadily extra extra precise. As for even as the subsequent close bypass occurs, i believe the subsequent one asteroid hunters have calculated will zip surpassed Earth is 2024 (yet that is only a wager). i am hoping this enables. good success.

Taken into account the asteroid-s dimensions, half km. length, the volume about 2*10power8 and mass will be 10power9kg.The energy:0.5mvpower2 result, taken the speed 9000m/s,about:4*10power16Joules.This means 2millions tones TNT[trinitroglycerine],or 200atomic bomb [10ktones,like Hiroshima-s 08.06.1945].A surface of 500,000squarekm may be entirely destroyed. It was a true danger for the Earth.

I forget how big they said it was...but if it was really big, then it would be extinction if it hit the Earth. If it hit the moon, we'd probably see a big ring of fire going around the moon...and maybe get some debris from it.

Probably not. To quote Homer Simpson, "it would have burned up in the atmosphere until it's the size of a chihuaha's head."
