activated carbon is pure and was heated in inert atmosphere to drive off water, etc. if you're taking brickets it's gonna be a fun time for you cuz that stuff is far from pure.

The difference between regular charcoal and activated charcoal is the available surface area and the chemical composition of that surface. As mentioned above, you activate charcoal by heating in the absence of oxygen. That's what makes it expensive.

Activated charcoal will adsorb a great many different kinds of organic molecules, making it an excellent filter material.

Activated Charcoal is regular charcoal heated in the absence of air. This drives out all the moisture and other sundry material and makes the charcoal porous and reactive.
