Truck drivers, atheletes, military personnel and government employees all take random drug tests. Since we trust our children with teachers up to 8-hours a day, why don't they take drug tests as well?

That's the usual answer from schools, that they don't have enough money.
But, they will spend hundreds of thousands of dollars for lawyers and court fees to fight parents because the school does not want to help children with special needs.
Or they will spend it all on the football team...

Many schols do require drug tests for teachers, some pre-hire, and some random. You may find that it depends upon whether the school is private or public, and/or which state, county, or city the school is in. There can advantages in receiving government funding if a school implements a drug-free program (including drug tests). In addition, many schools still cling to the idea of drug testing as a violation of privacy (as well as other reasons) and do not require such testing.

I don't know I wonder the same thing and I work in a school. But they do do a pretty thorough background check.

No they do not have random drug tests. I have not heard of any district at least in Illinois drug test teachers. They do drug test bus drivers though!

Very good point. The schools probably don't have enough money. But teachers should be required because they have a very important job with our children. I think they only have to if someone suspects a problem.

I think they probably have random drug tests, but it probably depends upon the particular school district.
