I disagree with you.
Unfortunately sometimes World Cup is just about statistics and numbers. For the ones who does not know a lot of soccer, World Cup is about the winner.... but for the ones who love the game is about a lot of games, the passion they felt, is about teams that made surprises (Turkey in 2002, Cameroon in 1990, for example), teams that did not played as well as everyone expected (remember Colombia in 1994? for example), players that brighten, new players discovery... and so many other things, Is about the passion that every single fan felt during that month. You cannot take away all that just talking about the champion.
And as long as soccer remain as a passion for players and fan, it will survive as it is right now.
So I don't agree with eliminate the 3rd place match... usually this is one of the most beautiful games in the World Cup, because teams just play soccer with no pressure at all... they just have fun and show good soccer. remember Italy - England in 1990?

I really disagree with you, and I am sure Hakan Sukur is also in disagreement with your posture, as he has the record in scoring the fastest goal in a World Cup, only in 11 seconds. Even more I think that the teams who lose in quarter finals should also play some matches so to see who is the best of them and that the FIFA's ranking works well once in the whole history. Sometimes these matches are the best in all the World Cup, since they have nothing to loose. I remember 2002's 3rd place final match, it was great, 5 goals in only one match, they took risks, so to win, but sometimes teams speculate and do not try to win the match immediately.

World Cup is not just about the winner, it is about the Game!! Or else the weaker team may as well forget about playing in the World Cup.

Well if you knew something about soccer you would know that even the third place game is important for FIFA ranking, that one game can move a team up and it is also important for players who will receive a bigger bonus for finishing 3rd instead of 4th..
so many people here but yet only 10% really know anything about soccer...

YES, they should also do away with 0:0 scores and kicks after, the teams should play untill someone scores,
Just like in Hockey (btw The only true sport left).
If the score is 0:0 after 90 then you better keep playing.

I agree with you! The winner of the 3rd place is none other than a "non-champion" but the one who lost the 3rd place is going to be hurt and humiliated once again. arrg!
