How do we go about changing a system that does not work effectively? Often I feel insignificant, like no matter what we try we are just compounding a problem that is deeply set in the foundations of our society. I can give you no definate example, just that it seems these days like the only way to create a surrounding that holds honesty and understanding is to completely illiminate ones fellow human beings through self isolation. That I realise is not only harder than it sounds, but also does nothing to change the circumstances that leave people fearful. Our freedoms are gradually being taken from us & we are left with few, if any avenues that honestly make a difference. We are surrounded by material abundance and yet people are still fearful, homeless, in poverty and without recourse against injustices. I ask you what you think? What answers you might see to right the wrongs that surround us? Is there an answer that we can implement? Your opinions are what I seek!!

It always seems this way when Republicans are in control of the white house and senate. You either have to get involved in politics and try to make a change, or move out of the country.. I like to think both are extreme. So i don't focus on how bad this country is, i focus on how to make my life better and the life of my family. Trust me, not as many homeless people are as bad off as you think. A lot of them would rather sit around all day drinking then work.. It takes almost no effort to get a construction job.. All you have to do is go walk on to a site and ask if they need help.. This is a fear based country.. The new trys to scare you..That is how they suck you in... You know on July 4th fox news said N Korea was firing long range missiles at us? While CNN was simply saying they were testing short range missiles that failed after 200 miles.. Or how after 9-11 they put the fear of a dirty bomb in us that the made a multiple movies out of that scenario.. Or how plastic sheeting and duct tape would save us from a chemical attack...Of course they want to scare us..that is how they make their agenda's work.. They topic for the 2008 presidential election will probably be terrorism again..Just stop watching the news..But wait..the bird Flu or west niles could come when you aren't watching..They blow things out of proportion and make americans afraid of everything, and they even invent new things for americans to be afraid of.. I don't think that will ever change, because uplifting positive life changing stories don't bring in the ratings...

Just yesterday I presented a proposal for Catholic group health care to my pastor. It calls for the Church to communicate to its uninsured that it will act as the middle man and pool prospective buyers together into a group plan. The Church or a lay committee would do the legwork in shopping for the plan. The uninsured would pay for the premiums. The health care industry would have increased premiums, however the cost of the premiums would fall due to the increase in supply as companies competed for the large pool. So there is no incentive for insurance companies to see that the uninsured become insured because their overall profits will not change. It would be a costly expense for them. However, the Church could clearly take the side of the poor, which is the Christian thing to do. But I'm not holding my breath considering the Church has always been the tool of laissez-faire capitalism. I agree with you that we are insignificant.

Sadly, I see little hope. It will take something catastrophic; Natural disaster, war, global economic depression, epidemic, etc, that would kill millions and send billions into poverty. Only something like this would make people realize that fundamental changes would need to be made. Until then power will stay in the hands of the rich few. Poor and middle class will power the economic machine and fight the wars of the rich. Media controlled by large corporations will determine what we watch and listen to; ultimately telling us how to think. Anything outside the norm will be criticised and ridiculed.
Ultimately, I fear for the next generation and the mess we'll leave them.

Deep and thoughtful question, thanks. I sincerely believe that God designed the world to be such a place, but He also created us with a free will, so we thwarted his plan. Eventually, in Heaven, there will be such a place as you describe but not now on the earth. This shouldn't stop us from making progress in that direction though. I've found when I live like God wants (as best I understand from scripture) I do help move society (at least my corner of it) in the direction of which you speak.
