as a response to an irritating object inside its shell, the mollusks will deposit layers of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in the form of the minerals aragonite or calcite (both crystalline forms of calcium carbonate) held together by an organic horn like compound called conchiolin. this combination of calcium carbonateand conchiolin is called nacre, or as most known it mother of pearl

It starts when a small grain of sand or some other irritant gets stuck inside the mollusk while it's feeding. As a defense it secretes a mucos that hardens and insulates the irritant from the flesh. This continues layer after layer until ...ding.... a pearl is created. The longer the mollusk lives, the larger the prarl gets.

The pearl process is actually a defense system to isolate an intrusion. Say a grain of sand is trapped inside the mollusk, the grain will be covered with nacre to avoid any infection. After a while, and many nacre layers, you will get a pearl.
In rough, that is the system. But I am no biologist.

They get a foreign body in their shell, like a grain of sand, so they wrap this protective coating around it to stop it from irritating them and it becomes a pearl. They now put stuff into oysters to make them produce pearls artificially.

Molluscs do not make the pearl.Oysters do. A grain of sand invades the oyster and the motion of the sea and tides make for the oyster to be irritated by the grain of sand over time.A pearl is produced.
