The explanation behind Nintendo's new name for the system is very simple. Nintendo believed that the name Revolution was far too western and American to be globally marketable. For a while, they've been using unique names for different countries for each system (example - Nintendo 64 {American} - Ultra 64 {Japan}; Nintendo Entertainment System {American} - Famicon {Japan})

So now they came up with a universal word that Nintendo believes that anyone of any race, nation or creed can understand and that word is Wii pronouned (We). A simple word which children and adults alike have exclaimed for centuries which invokes fun, excitement, imagination and simplicity which is the vision for Nintendo's latest system, a system that they envision everyone being able to enjoy.

Also, according to Wikipedia, the name was spelt with two i's instead of the word's proper spelling to represent two gamers getting together, symbolizing that video games are social and promote socializing and NOT being anti-social as they are stigmatized to be. The i's also represent the shape of the new controller.

They decided to name it the Wii because Revolution is hard to pronounce in other languages, however as much as many people dislike the name Wii it rolls of the tongue very easily. I did prefer Revolution, it just sounded better.

its called Wii because supposedly the new controls with the sensors makes it easier for beginners and experienced players to play, so "we" (wii) can all play it.
