Crossing your legs is never proper. Cross at the ankles. Cross your ankles, but make sure your legs are not directly in front of you. They must be off to the side, otherwise peers are able to see up your skirt. If you decide to cross right over left, your legs should be off to your right side, (and vice versa with left over right).

In a relaxed setting, cross your legs at the ankle, seated with your weight on one hip (slightly to one side). In a formal setting it is not proper, or even possible in most cases, to have your legs crossed. A 'Lady', of that period, never crossed her legs at the knee. You are blessed to wear one of the most awkward costumes, aside from a suit of armor or a mascot/cartoon character. I commend you on your strength.
