Call the larger number "a" and the smaller number "b". We know the following:
a + b = 31
a - b = 7; therefore, a = b + 7
Solve by replacing "a" with its equivalent.
a + b =
b + 7 + b =
2b + 7 = 31
2b = 24
b = 12
Now it's easy to solve for a
a = b + 7
a = 12 + 7
a = 19
So the two numbers are:
a = 19
b = 12
