One of the strangest discoveries ever is that the expansion rate of the universe is increasing as time goes on, not decreasing. What is the current thinking on this? Is it an accepted observation? Does it indicate another form of energy, something that might be related to the Big Bang? Something that might one day be an energy source, or means of transportation?

The accelerating expansion is due to a non-zero value for what is called the Cosmological Constant. This constant was originally proposed by Einstein because he didn't like the fact that his equations predicted an expanding universe. For certain values of the constant, it is possible for there to be a static solution to his equations. When the expansion was observed, Einstein called the constant his 'biggest blunder'. Well, once a thing like this is proposed, it tends to stick around until it is ruled out by the evidence. Well, the evidence now points to a value that is not zero, although it is very different than the value Einstein proposed.

One interpretation for a non-zero constant is that there is an energy associated with space-time that is somewhat repulsive. This energy is often called Dark Energy and is different from Dark Matter (which is found around galaxies). What exactly Dark Energy consists of is not known, but it constitutes about 75% of the energy in the universe.

The current theory is that the rate of expansion is caused by dark ENERGY, not matter. Dark matter actually does the exact opposite of dark energy, slowing down a star's rotation enough so that it can burn without its makeup scattering into infinity. Both dark matter and dark energy were discovered recently, and no one knows exactly what they are, but they are independent of each other, not different names for the same thing.

the theory that aspect is going backward even as shifting swifter than the speed of light isn't supported by employing mathematics nor by employing the perception of relativity. Time flows in a route. the speed at which it flows ought to correctly be seemed to be distinct for a shifting merchandise (relative to the observer who's measuring the time). once you're the single measuring the time, then your own % received't impact your own perception of a even as bypass (that's going to continually look on the same cost, interior the same route. If we evaluate the bypass of time for a shifting merchandise with the bypass of time contained in the 'relax body' of the observer (actual time for that observer), then we ought to get: perceived bypass = actual bypass * SQRT(a million - v^2) the position v is the speed of the item, measured as a fragment of the speed of light -- if an merchandise is going at 1/2 the speed of light, then v = 0.5. v = 0.5 Perceived = actual * SQRT(a million - (0.5)^2) = actual * SQRT(a million-0.25) = actual*SQRT(0.75) = actual*0.866 (time ought to look slowed down by employing about a million/6 or its actual cost). For v = a million (precisely the speed of light), we get Perceived = actual*SQRT(a million-a million) = actual * 0 = time is stopped. From there, the so-referred to as "person-pleasant sense" says that aspect might want to bypass backwards if we bypass swifter. If it extremely is authentic, then if we make v more suitable than a million (swifter than mild) we'd want to continually get a detrimental answer. v = a million.4142 (40-one% swifter than mild) perceived = actual * SQRT(a million - v^2) = actual * SQRT(a million - (a million.4142)^2) = actual * SQRT(a million - 2) = actual * SQRT(-a million) and there we are stomped: the sq. root of -a million isn't -a million. take -a million and multiply it by employing -a million, you get +a million, no longer -a million. The sq. root of -a million isn't a actual volume. Mathematicians have invented 'imaginary' numbers to remedy such issues. sure, there are theories of the universe that allow time to bypass in an 'imaginary' route. regardless of the indisputable fact that, that isn't the same as 'shifting backwards'. So, going swifter than mild (if it were achievable) does no longer reason time to bypass backwards. It motives time to bypass in a route that we do not realize.

WEll when you add more things to something it expands imagine the universe is a person when you eat too much you expand.

its just the fact that the more there is like body or energywise then it will get bigger.

It is because voids (opposite of matter) push outward. Hence cosmological constant.
