This is "THE" standard misconception about crossdressers *sigh*. It seems like no one does their research, but just makes assumptions based on their own narrow minded perceptions.
The percenteage of gays in the crossdressing community is really about the same as in the straight community. Some of us are gay, some are bi, but most are straight. In fact, most crossdressers are married, with children and their relationships tend to be very secure.
For as long as I can remember, people have used men dressing in female clothes as a target for fun (remember Milton Berle on television in the old days?) and society has definitely discouraged males from behaving in any sort of "feminine" manner (as in boys should not play with dolls, etc.) and if a man acts a bit sensitive or appreciates the beauty in things or gets emotional, he's seen as a "fem".
Since most people tend to throw bricks at anything that is different, crossdressers become a prime target. A male acting in a feminine manner is seen as "gay" because he allows himself to express his feminine feelings and the carry-on thought process is that he also likes to do "girl" things sexually and is therefore gay. Go figure!
There are many reason other than sexual ones why people crossdress (although it's true that most start because of the sexual kick), but just wearing feminine clothes doesn't make a person gay or bi, nor does it have anything to do with sexual preference.
We all have both testosterone and estrogen in our bodies and therefore we ll have opposite gender feeling from time to time. The unfortunate thing is that males are taught to keep these feelings buried deeply and not to acknowledge them at all, so they tend to cope with them by expressing anger or derision.
Sorry this is so long, but I could write much more on this subject.
Good luck! :)

Most of those people have never even met a crossdresser. Simple answer. You can't understand someone until you have met and talked to them for a while, not just a few minutes. If more crossdressers actually got together and wore something subtle with their women out in public, say a denim or knit or a skating skirt it would be the other way around. No one is going to question more than one at a time. Second, legally, you can wear whatever you want in society as long as it's not sexually explicit and the police know this.
The problem is being subtle about it. You know you wouldn't want to go out dressed like Ru Paul -- by the way she is beautiful, but frankly if you went out and did it gradually, the whole world of crossdressing would become a non-issue overnight, because it IS becoming acceptable to be who you are and who you're with in today's society...
Just do it and don't worry about what other people think. If it's a problem, it's theirs, not yours....

I know not all crossdressers are gay. But the reason Most People think that way is because the majority of crossdressers are gay.

Drag queens. The only time most people see a man in women's clothes are the obviously gay drag performers. With no other source of info they assume that crossdressing = gay.
Oh yea pistolpete79 doesn't know waht he is talking about.

Goes with the turf. some people assume everyone who dresses in the clothes of the opposite sex is gay, and all gays want to be a member of the opposite sex. they're just ignorant, educate as many as you can. The percentage of gays who crossdress is lower than the straight population, from what I've read.

Because people in general think that anyone who crosses the gender line in their clothing is "queer" in any sense of the word you care to name. It's particularly true of men who crossdress because there are more societal rules on how men are supposed to behave and dress. Basically, it comes down to misogyny -- the attitude being women should want to be like men, but men shouldn't want to be like women in any way -- as if there's something wrong with women. go figure.

Why would a good self-respecting man want to look like a woman? From the heterosexual perspective, what happens (sexually) to a woman, a man puts his male part into the woman's female part. Why, again, would someone in a dress, trying to look like a female want to do that? So some man could put his male part into, um, well, who else but homosexual men want a male part put into them?
Cross-dressing is not seen as anything but advertising--put your male part in me. What man would advertise that except he were a homosexual. Otherwise, the desire for a man to cross dress is, to the common heterosexual's perspective (man or woman) as weird as dogs that want to hump only cats.
The story is told of a hunter who had a dog that would walk on water. He showed it to a hunting buddy, even had the dog walk across a pond, "Notice anything?" The friend said, "Yeah, your dog can't swim." It is that kind of reasoning.
