Modeling has nothing to do with how pretty you are but how tall, how much you weigh, and how 'interesting' looking you are. Take a look at all top models. They really aren't all that beautiful but they each have a uniqueness about them. The taller and thinner the better but that requires very drastic measures (puking and heavy drugs in many cases, look at Kate). Think twice before pursuing a career as a professional model.
If you are looking to become an artistic model for photographers, that's a different story. I have a friend who is a semi-pro model for a local photographer and she's about 5'2" but still very thin, about 90-95lbs.
In either case you must have professional shots taken of yourself. B&W, color, head shots, full body shots, shots of you in a bathing suit, in different types of clothing and shoes and hair styles and makeup styles. You have to show your versatality. Put together a very professional looking portfolio for each agency to keep and include your business card and a short biography. Then you just hoof it to all the modeling agencies and photographers you can think of and hope that they pick you up. If you are truly serious don't give up, be persistant.
Good luck.

anyone can be a model with the right attitude. However I have heard a lot of bad thing about SOME (not all) modelling agencies and how they make you pay for photos and photo sessions before they take you on then never give you any work. My advise to you is if you have a friend who is reasonable with a camera (do not have to be a professional) Just take 100 photos of yourself in different poses, clothing and backgrounds then pick out 10-20 nice photos. You can then use this as a portfolio, and even better instead of printing them which cost you money every time, host them on a website and get some business cards print with the website address on and just hand these out instead. This is a far cheaper way of doing it and with no RISK.
However if you would like a personal portfolio site please contact me and I will set you on up for free. I can design you a fully personalised flash website with as much or little information and then host it for you. This site can contain a gallery of your photos, personal information, list of work, contact details, etc or if you prefer just a couple of photos and nothing else. It can be password protected and all images will be protected as is humanly possible, or the photos can be available to download.
Examples of work can be provided on request. Just message me here if you want, I am a professional website designer but have lots of free time (and enough money) so I am currently doing free sites for small bands, small artist etc, basically anyone who could not afford them otherwise. I have my own hosting server so can offer hosting servers or you can host the site yourselves. No images sent to me will be used for anything other than your site and I will not give anyone your detail or link to the site. You will have complete control and the site can be removed or changed at any time. This is not a scam and I will design a site for FREE, I do not need the money, and enjoy working. If you do want it message me you can tell me what you want and how you want it done and I will help.

Try to be original and at the same time look sexy like the magazine. Keep in "contact" with top people in that industry. If you don't make it, do some modelling in penthouse or playboy.
The internet is always the best place to try out for free and at the same time get noticed.

First.. be very careful.. that industry is notorious for preying on young, inexperienced women.
Second... Work on your LOOK... have trusted friends help you.
Third... seek out a photographer... a professional if you can find one you can trust and afford... and create a PORTFOLIO.
Last... find a model that has made it, see if she'll tell you where she studied, worked and who represents her.
Good luck... it's a tough business.
