Usually the 2500 series or 250 series (ford) is the best for towing because of the larger engine and transmission. That said you can get away with something else. I pull a Zeppelin II with a dry weight of 7500lbs plus all the junk we put in it with my 1500 chevy with a 5.7 litre V-8 with no problems at all. The Dodge Durango has good towing capactiy. Suburbans pull well also. Look at the towing capacity of your vehicle. If you travel all over all the time buy the big truck. If you go on the weekend excursion you can get something that will adequately pull your trailer and not eat so much gas when you aren't.

almost any 3/4 ton P/U should handle your rig but i would advise a longwheelbased one instead of a short box since the extra wheelbase will reduce the chance of the trailer wagging the truck. if you are pulling in fairly flat country even a heavy dury 1/2 ton can handle the load. a full size van or a suburban type is another option. i have found the car companies tend to underate the tow capacities somewhat but you excede them at your own risk. your down the road weight is what you need to really know. food , gear, clothes, water, waste water, propane, and all the rest of the junk we collect in any RV. i would suspect you will end up in the 8000 range with all tanks full.

I used a Chevrolet 2500 for six years to pull a 28 footer with no problems. That was up and down mountains as well as in the flat lands. All across the USA.
