There is one little story. They say Nobel had a girlfriend that left him for mathematics. Then, he swore not to put any prize ever for mathematics research and discoveries.

Nobel wanted to award young men and women for promising inventions and discoveries. He didn't think mathematics is an invention... The prizes should also, acording to the will, be given to the persons that has done the greatest contribution to mankind's benefit. Mathematics is so abstract that it is difficult to see it as an invention that increases quality of life for mankind....
The same goes for the economics prize wich is NOT a real nobel prize!

Why should mathematicians awarded by Nobel? Probably you say because it is a science too. But this is not the criteria. What does u think about Peace and Literature? Is it science?

He felt that the awards should be for practical applications rather than purely theoretical achievements.
There is no truth to the rumor that he was upset because his wife was having an affair Mittag-Leffler. Nobel never married.

hmm... maybe because he was dead before the first one was given out?
If you were giving out money for something.. would you give yourself money for that too?
Alfred Nobel established the Nobel prize awards in his Will... he was the one awarding the prize (well.. he was providing the money for it)...
