If scan disk finds entries that are not valid and are truncated, does that mean my hard disk is buggered?

No, it's not. If it says something about bad sectors or bad clusters (or error reading from drive) then it's time to be concerned.

You are probably still using FAT32 partitioning. The NTFS filingsystem has many advantages over FAT32 drives which makes it more reliable, more stable and secure. If your drive is FAT32 partitioned you might want to conver to NTFS in near future. It also has problems but much less than FAT32.

You can convert set the drive for conversion from windows but I think it's best left to a professional.
