Yes - great movies - I prefer the 1959 version with Lana Turner over the '34 edition.

"Imitation of Life" is a movie that everyone I know has seen at least twice in their life. My family use to watch the movie every Thanksgiving or Christmas holiday. We would sit around and cry a little...be mad a little...and then cry all over again. Especially when the mother died. If you could take yourself back to that day and time, you kind of understand why she did not want to black. Times were very hard for blacks, especially women. Regardless, I would never trade my mother for fame or fortune. That is the part that brought you to tears. She understood her daughter and still loved her unconditionally. Thinking about the movie makes me sad and I have not seen it in years. If my daughter dis-owned or disrespected me, I don't know how I would react. It would be like that sweet old lady.

I've seen both versions. The Lana Turner movie makes me burst out crying at the end every time I see it.

Yeah I saw it when I was a kid. It kinda creeped me out. I saw it again a couple of years ago. You're right, its a good movie and has an allstar cast. Wasn't it Mahalia Jackson who sang that funeral song? I never saw the 1934 version.

LanaTurner version better than Claudette Coberte though i liked them both. It was my mother's favorite film. Sandra Dee was a good choice for the daughter in the remake. They should remake it again, though i doubt it would work these days with so many single mother families. It is just not as attractive to today's market.

Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful movie. I cry everytime I see it. I didn't realize there was also one made in 1934. I do group therapy work with adolescent girls and I use this movie as one of my discussion workshops. Everyone should see this movie.
