Well, there's your answer in your question..."slightest amount of research".
Even rational intelligent people have the ability to not give a rip, and are willing to be sucked in by the "drive-by-media" (that's the best thing Rush has come up with in years) because they are willing to "feel" the news rather than analyze it.
Case in point: my wife is extremely intelligent, but not very informed. Myself, being a Journalism major, announce every opinionated, half-truthed, slanted statement made by the media, and she doesn't want to hear it, she thinks I'm just being critical. I would do the same for a "conservative" newscast, but there aren't any.
Are they politically motivated? I think their viewpoint is colored more by two factors:
1st, go back and read a newspaper from the 60's. Very factual, good information....and a boring read. Whoever decided news had to be entertaining did us all a great disservice. Now you've got people trying to be "artisitic" in their news coverage, which is going to be more subjective. And as it has been said, beauty is in the eye of the (liberal) beholder, which leads me to....
2nd, this is not so much as a political agenda as it is there is a worldview that is predominant in our society today, and most of today's journalists are a product of that worldview, and it comes out in their reporting. For further reading on this subject, I recommend the excellent book below. It is very enlightening.
P.S. Barry's answer is a great example to the rest of the class of why we need to analyze statements....excellent use of half-truths, Barry!

We can hardly find a media report which is free of distortion. It seems reporting facts truthfully has never been part of journalism - be it right or left. All reports like a ritual are always tinted with a heavy drop of discoloration. Look at all the misinformation and misreporting of facts leading to the Iraqi war!

90% of all media is owned by just 7 companies worldwide. 6 of those companies are regular contributor to the republican party in the U.S. The idea that they are left wing was spread by the christian coalition in a "pre-emptive attack" on the media to try to force them to be even MORE conservative.
Conservatives rely more on emotions to make decisions whereas liberals are more rational. Also, it is a statistical fact that evangelical christians are more likely than any other religious group to not hold a high school diploma as adults. Now, who's rational and who's stupid?

I agree with you
Most of the news is slanted to the far left. They won't report anything, at least not much, that favors the Right. Much of which, in my opinion, is the better moral choice.
I suggest for a more fair reporting, watch Fox news. They tend to report both side equally. And if you would like a Christian view on the news, go to AFR.net. I listen to their news casts on the radio at 5 till every hour and I like most of what they say. Although we won't agree with everyone all the time.

Very easily. Just look at what "Right Wing" governments do to the nations they represent. They fail to protect domestic economies. Heck, they even fail to protect the individuals who make these economies run. They reduce the tax responsibilities of rich corporations and rich individuals. They give themselves huge double digit raises while telling 'The People',"we all have to tighten our belts and pitch in for the good of everyone and the nation". And if your are really lucky, chances are you can go to war just to make sure the Foreign Policy is protected. If you are not with us, you are against us!
Right Wing governments destroy what ever they touch - environmentally, economically, socially and most of all humanity.

The type of brainwashing that's loose in our country is use to an extreme that even the strong minded have a hard time resisting it. It's also the fact that kids hear the same messages in their public schools, so there's really no escape from it for the young.

growing up in the 60's, I asked my dad a similar question about the news ...this was his reply...
If you believe 50% of what you see (on the news) and 50% of what what you read (newspapers)... you might get 10% of the truth.
