No...And shift workers who have to babysit computers at night time that are bored out of their skulls prove it. They are generally not happy people and always find things to complain about because they are BORED (10 years of shift work experience).
If you keep folks busy they are generally happier because they don't have time to think how bad things are when they really are pretty good.

It depends on if you have some money while not working and if you're doing something with your free time. I've been out of work for 2 months and it feels great because I do have money saved up. I feel free. It has allowed me to venture out into the world and do what I really want to do. Traveling is the best thing one can do, even sometimes more productive than working. It is truly life enriching and you will experience many things you may not have been able to experience by just staying home and working. We're brainwashed to think we have to work all our lives to get material things, granted we do need to work for our essentials (food, shelter, clothing, healthcare), it is nice to have an extended amount of time off. I for one am proud that i'm not part of this ratrace. This is my opinion but everyone has different financial situations.

I don't think it's if we don't work I think it's that we're more happy if income did not depend on it. People would stand up for their human rights if not for fear of being fired and having no income. People would take days off when they were sick if money wasn't an issue. I think everyone needs some type of work or organized hobbie to feel useful, but we would all be happy if it was on our terms.

Do you mean work for money to earn a living?
If you don't like your occupation, you would be happier not 'working', but no one is happy doing nothing if they are sane.
Idle hands make idle minds.
I don't work for pay anymore, but I can assure you that I have never been busier or more productive, even though my paying job was all consuming.
I am much happier when I control what I work at, regardless of whether it is for pay or not.

Some people are glad when they don't need to work - it gives them the time to do the things they enjoy in life, and allows them to see new and different things.
Other people are workaholics--even after working one job for 30+ years, they get another one. They don't seem to have an identity without a job.
Some mothers would really like to be home with their children - but can't be due to finances. This causes them to miss so much of their children's lives.

The perverse nature of humans is that we must have balance in all things. Too much of a good thing is just as bad as too much of a bad thing. Just like there is no good without evil, and there is no beauty without uggliness, there can be no appreciation of free time if we don't work.
Then consider that most people define their self worth in part by what they contribute to society. We work, we do something that keeps the world running and that makes us a part of the world.
As nice as the idea of never working is, I believe most of us would wither and die on the vine without work. Look what happens to retirees if they do not do something after retirement.

I am so much more happier when I am working. I work for the movie industry, and sometimes I have 1 to 2 months off at a time, which is not fun. This off time is without pay.

No. We are molded in the way that we will feel good after a hard day's work doing something that we believe in OR for an end mean that we believe in. Such as doing a job we hate to put food on the table for a family we adore.

NO WE'RE NOT HAPPY IF WE DON'T WORK MAYBE FOR A PERIOD OF TIME BUT AFTER YOU RUN OUT OF MONEY THEN YOU'RE BACK TO BEING DEPRESSED AND OUT OF MONEY. WHEN YOU CAN'T SPEND WE SEEM TO FALL DOWN BECAUSE OTHER PEOPLE GET TO BUY THE MOST FASHION AND THINGS I'M NOT HAPPY AT ALL WHEN I'M NOT WORKING BECAUSE I CAN'T GET THE THINGS THAT I WANT TO HAVE.
