what was the rec american classic in last month's elle UK edition?

last month's elle (july - one with the flip flops) recommended three books. one it claimed to be an american indie-type classic. it sounded good but i've recycled the mag and forgotten what it was! can you help? i think it had a yellow cover.

note - UK edition!
the American website is ace but does not refer to the same mag content
