There is one that gets under neath our house. We have little children so we don't want to set traps because a child might step in it and lose his/her foot.

Use a live trap which has a door at each end and when the animal goes inside the doors fall. You can then take the animal to a diferent location to live

Some options:

1. Get a live trap. It is a mesh cage that you bait. The woodchuck goes in and the door shuts. Next carry the angry and trapped woodchuck to his new home and let him go. The trap can't possibly harm your children. Make sure you get one big enough for the animal.

2. Some places like Agway, Southern Gin & Grain, Tractor Supply, etc... sell "rodent bombs". Plug up all but one woodchuck hole. Light the "bomb" (which is just a very poisonous smoke bomb) and put it in the last hole. Fill that one with dirt. Problem solved.

3. Invest in a gun. Use the gun to kill the woodchuck.

use a hav-a-hart trap.

Children will not become stuck in it and the animal will be kept alive so you can transport it to a more suitable location far from your house. If you release it too close it may come back.

If you really want it 'gone' tie a rope to the trap and chuck it in some water as it will sink (not that I am an advocate of this method, but if you were planning on killing it anyway...) and you can pull the trap back up a few minutes later.
