To complete any circuit you must have a positve and a negative, the earth return is used on cars as it is easier and cheaper to make the chassis part of the circuit it cute out the need to wire something and have a wire running back to the battery to complete the circuit, negative earth is used in europe due to the high salt content in the atmosphere in the 40's and 50's we used to use a positive earth but this linked with the salt content was found to corrode cars a lot quicker so the descion was made to go to earth return

It could mean negative earth, which is for some european cars. It means it is essentially ground backwards. It would say this in the engine compartment and somewhere around the battery tray. Is it a European car? An MG perhaps.

you have to hammer a pole into the ground in your garden and earth the car to it, either by driving the pole through the roof and floor into your ground, or using a power cable from a sub-station..... which can be freely obtained from poundland for £5.99 per sqr meter.
I recomend the cola flavour ones!.
