Yes this is true, and not a wive's tale. Most caucasian (white) babies have blue eyes when they are born, and the eye color changes (if it's going to) within the first 6 months. It has something to do with pigment.

African American babies are usually born with brown or dark green/hazel eyes (once in a while blue).

The iris of a newborn Caucasian infant is almost always blue. This is because the cells in this area of the eye at this time contain little or no pigment. After the first few months of life, pigment starts to develop and the color can become darker. When an infant is six months old, you can usually tell whether their eyes will remain blue, or turn brown, hazel or green. African American children are generally born with brown eyes (more pigment at birth. Albino children (children with no pigment) are born with pink eyes.

White babies are generally born with blue eyes and brown babies are born with light brown. It's because the pigment isn't in concentrated amounts. By the time the baby is 6 months old his eyes will have changed.

I know that generally it is caucasian babies that are born with blue eyes, but you are right, any baby can be born with blue eyes. I think it has something to do with not being exposed to nautral light before birth so the pigments have not had a chance to develope. my son's eyes stayed grey-blue until he was about 9 months or so. My husband and I both have brown eyes and so do my parents and his, so it was very likely for Gabe's eyes to turn brown, but both my grandmother's have blue eyes so a throw back was also a possibility.

Many babies are born with blue eyes because eye color is determined by myalin (sp?) and the more myalin the darker the eyes and babies dont necisarily have all the myalin they will have in there eyes at birth.

My daughter was born with brown eyes and brown hair. She is caucasian, German/Irish. Now at 10 months she has blond hair and green eyes. My first son had blue eyes until he was 6 years old when they turned green.

But I do know what you mean. It does seem most babies are born with blue or bluish eyes.

My friends baby who is black and so are both parents had a baby and her eyes were blue for the first 2 weeks, good question.
Why are people so quick to not read into the WHOLE question before answering and why does it always have to come down to black and white!!!!
